Fashion Killa

Some of this quick trip through the evolution of fashion and hip-hop as the two changed each other went over my head since I’ve only got a passing familiarity with most of the artists checked. Sowmya Krishnamurthy obviously has a long history covering hip-hop and her insights and factoids are those of both a journalist and clear fan. She is gentle and generous in her re-telling of how rap’s biggest names evolved their style and business approaches since the genre emerged from NYC. I’d be interested in reading more from her adding another perspective on the history of urban fashion: its reception by the fan. The sales numbers become truly staggering as the text unfolds (did Adidas really say it would lose nearly a quarter-billion when it parted ways with Ye?). Those fans were buying the clothes for a reason, and I think Krishanurthy’s take on that would be fascinating.
