Our Moon

Rebecca Boyle’s Our Moon was a great summer non-fiction read, neither too shallow nor too deep, exploring humanity’s (and the planet’s) relationship with our moon. Her journalist’s touch kept the four-billion-year-long story moving along, and I appreciated her introductions to key mathematical concepts that left it to the reader to either try to understand or not. “Here’s the math,” she seemed to say, “but you don’t really need it to understand everything else.” I’ve got a ton of follow-up reading to do on the asserted collision with Theia that many believe resulted in the moon’s creation and profoundly re-shaped the Earth, but it’s summer and I’m going to leave that for later. In the meantime, Boyle communicates just enough of its importance for the lay reader to follow along. Our Moon was a meaty, but digestible, treat that I wound up ripping through. 5/5.
