We, the Data

Wendy Wong asserts that “datafication” is a societal issue that could be usefully addressed using a human rights framework. It’s a relatively quick read that superficially explores several of datafication’s implications and how a human rights lens might apply to those in comparison to the privacy and expression defaults. It’s a thought-provoking work that builds on the surveillance capitalism body of thinking that’s growing. Obviously a deep thinker on these topics, I wonder if a more focused work might better have explored one or two of the several topics she explores instead of the shallower survey undertaken here. 3/5
