January reading

I haven’t  been keeping up with reviews so far in 2025, but also haven’t read many books! Both Slow Burn and The Idiot were long reads. Catherine Hernandez’ Behind You was – despite its evocation of the Bernardo/Homolka murders – lighter fare. Slow Burn asserted the need to start implementing mitigations for climate change that is making the planet hotter with implications for especially those less affluent (whether in the Global South or across the tracks). Elif Batuman’s The Idiot was a slog – it feels like I spent most of the month getting through it. The protaganist, Selin, is in love with an enigmatic Ivan and the novel explores their relationship. It’s been many, many years since I read the Russian original, and so can only recognize the basic outlines of Dostoevsky’s novel in Batuman’s. A fresher read may have kept me reading longer each night.
