The Weight of Nature

I did enjoy Clayton Page Aldern’s The Weight of Nature that takes a look at the effects of climate change on our (in layperson’s terms) brains. Divided into three parts, the first two had more of the accessible science I like. We learn about the effects of heat on our thinking and mental well-being, with examples of the changes wrought by a warming climate throughout. In the second part, we learn about the parasites, bacteria and toxins linked to climate change that are damaging our human biology. The third section was where I began to lose a little interest as it gets less science-based and delves more into the sociology and psychology of climate change. I stayed with it, but the concepts seemed more grasping and it was harder for me to feel like I was learning something on every page. That said, Aldern’s writing is crisp, punchy and often funny, and I was glad to go on the journey with him. The Heat Will Kill You First, though, was definitely a meatier read. 3/5
