This was an easy five-star. Bora Chung’s collection of dystopian near-future stories is by turns haunting, funny and occasionally devastating. It was probably inevitable that I’d spend some time with explorations of AI, big data and surveillance capitalism this year – it’s the zeitgeist after all – and this fictional treatment is a humanizing bookend to the current crop of non-fiction titles addressing those. The original must be amazing, but Anton Hur’s translation is achingly on point.
